“Often, it is easy to agree that a new approach is needed to organizational situations…However, knowing what the new approach should be, is much more complicated.”
Let’s build upon this concept, which was introduced in post two, with a few thoughts…
– Pointing out where things are broken is much easier than fixing them.
– Complaining is much easier than providing a solution.
– Knowing how “not” to lead, is often easier than know how to lead.
In the summit, I shared that finding a way out of this conundrum might be revealed within the scientific literature. In other words, we might benefit from reviewing the scientific research literature within the domain of organizational leadership. What has the scientific community discovered regarding the most effective types of leadership?
Transformational Leadership Theory has been found to offer superior results. It is not common, but it is highly effective. The “Transformational Leadership” style (as scientifically defined) has four dimensions, which are often referred to as the “4 I’s.”
1) Idealized Influence
2) Inspirational Motivation
3) Intellectual Stimulation
4) Individualized Consideration
In everyday terms, these 4 I’s can be understood with the following descriptions.
1) Lead by example.
2) Invite people to craft a mutually shared organizational vision.
3) As your organizational members collectively pursue the vision, encourage and empower people to challenge the status quo.
4) Support and care for followers as people, not things.
What a joy it was to spend time with those who attended the Global Leadership Summit at ULL. Anytime there is a gathering with a focus and dialogue on the topics of leadership and organizational effectiveness, you can count me in! (smile)
